How to clean yoga mats

2022-05-11

1. Pay attention to the timing of cleaning yoga mats. Yoga mats need to be thoroughly cleaned every few months, and if you haven't taken care of them regularly or practice yoga every day, the interval should be even shorter. This not only extends the lifespan of the yoga mat, but also prevents the occurrence of odors and avoids bacterial contamination on the body. If you practice yoga every day, you should clean your yoga mat every month, especially on hot days. The more stains you see on a yoga mat, the more it needs to be thoroughly cleaned. If the surface of the yoga mat starts to peel off or fragments stick to the clothes, you can consider buying a new one.
2. Soak a yoga mat. Use warm water and mild cleaning agents such as dishwashing detergent to prepare a solvent. Soak the yoga mat in the bathtub for a few minutes. This helps to remove dirt, grease, and odors. When choosing a mild cleaning agent for yoga mats, dishwashing detergent and anti allergic laundry detergent are very good choices. Do not add too much detergent to warm water, as it can clean the yoga mat thoroughly. Excessive detergent can make yoga mats slippery and increase the difficulty of practicing yoga postures.
3. Use a soft cloth to hand wash a yoga mat. After soaking for a few minutes, clean both sides of the yoga mat with a soft cloth. When scrubbing, be thorough and pay attention to the areas where hands and feet come into contact most frequently. These areas are easy to distinguish because their color may be slightly darker compared to other areas of the yoga mat. When scrubbing both sides, be careful to avoid damaging the yoga mat or causing it to fall off in pieces. If you haven't seen any bubbles generated by the detergent, then this is correct. Remember, the amount of detergent and bubbles is enough to clean the yoga mat, too much can actually make the mat slippery and have the opposite effect.
4. Rinse the yoga mat with clean water. Drain the water soaked in the yoga mat from the bathtub and rinse it with clean water to obtain the finished yoga mat. This can rinse off the residue of cleaning products on the mat, minimizing the risk of the yoga mat becoming slippery. Rinse the yoga mat thoroughly until you see the flowing water clean. If the water still hasn't cleaned up after washing for a while, you can consider washing it again with a soft cloth.
5. Remove excess water from the yoga mat. Shake the yoga mat and shake off the surface water. Spread the yoga mat flat on a dry towel, then roll them together and squeeze out any remaining moisture. Don't twist the yoga mat! This will cause the yoga mat to wrinkle, tear, or deform. You can step on rolled up yoga mats and towels to squeeze out excess water more effectively.
6. Hang the yoga mat to dry. After squeezing out excess water, spread out the yoga mat on a towel and hang it up to dry thoroughly. You can use a clothes hanger to hang yoga mats, but be aware that this may leave creases on the mat. If you have a drying rack, you can hang the yoga mat on it so that both sides of the mat can dry quickly. Do not put the yoga mat in the dryer. This not only damages the yoga mat, but may also cause a fire. Be sure to wait until the yoga mat is completely dry before using it. Gently press the yoga mat with your fingers to help you determine if there is any remaining moisture inside.
